For 55 years, artisan has been Queensland’s only arts organisation that is specifically for craft and design practitioners—the skilled makers who transform raw materials into objects of beauty, function, and cultural significance.
Over the next three years, artisan is on an ambitious journey to elevate Queensland’s extraordinary craft and design talent to international prominence while building sustainable pathways for practitioners.
In just seven years, the world arrives in Queensland for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games. We’re supporting Queensland’s makers to capitalise on this once-in-a-generation opportunity to showcase our unique creative culture on the global stage.
And we can only do it with you!
“Help us write the next chapter of Queensland’s creative story. The world is watching. Let’s show them what we’re made of.”

“artisan plays a vital role in Queensland’s creative ecosystem by supporting makers at all career stages, connecting them to market opportunities and preserving craft practices. Their network reaches across Queensland, providing pathways for both regional and metropolitan practitioners. At UAP, our years of local and international work have led us to commission numerous artisan practitioners including Barbara Heath, Pamela See and Anna Varendorff for major public art projects, demonstrating how essential artisan is to maintaining a healthy arts ecosystem in Queensland.” Matthew Tobin |
|
“artisan is a singular organisation in our state: it is the only organisation representing the interests of Queensland craftspeople and makers of the 14 Australian Craft and Design Centres (ACDC) and to the World Crafts Council — Australia. Importantly, artisan is able to advocate and influence in these national arenas while maintaining direct connection with the individuals comprising the diverse maker community it represents and supports.” The Tim Fairfax Family Foundation |

Frequently asked questions
About the donation
What is artisan associates?
artisan associates is artisan’s membership program for Queensland's craft and design community. It's built around three pillars. Exchange, Exhibit, and Enterprise to build makers' capability, profile, and income. Together, they create a pathway from studio to market.
Who is artisan associates for?
Anyone connected to Queensland's craft and design sector. There are tiers for students and early-career makers, practicing professionals, collectors and peers such as organisations and guilds, galleries, councils, and design industry bodies.
How is artisan associates different from other industry memberships?
artisan associates is built to support the three pillars of artisan’s Exchange, Exhibit, and Enterprise programs. Four tiers include Student Maker, Professional Maker, Collector, and Peer, so every associate knows what they get and how it grows with their practice or benefits their support.
Student Makers get mentoring and early exposure to exhibitions, skills exchange and retail. Professional Makers get the full pathway with promotion, opportunities for income, commissions, corporate gifting. Collectors directly support the makers, knowledge and opportunities that keep Queensland's craft and design sector alive. Peers become strategic partners, building a cultural capability that supports makers, audiences, skills, infrastructure and tourism statewide.
This is the Makers' State: one pathway, from student to institution.
Soon, all associates will be able to add insurance to their membership for even more benefit.
Choosing a tier
Which tier is right for me?
Student Maker suits students and early-career practitioners. Professional Maker suits practicing craft and design professionals. Collector suits enthusiasts and dedicated supporters of Queensland makers. Peer suits organisations such as galleries, councils, education providers, and industry bodies. If you're unsure, our team is happy to help get in touch and we'll point you in the right direction.
Can I move between tiers later?
Yes. You can contact us through the artisan associates portal and we will walk you through the process.
What does 'by invitation' mean for exhibition opportunities?
artisan may invite expressions of interest for exhibition opportunities for makers and curators. These may be targeted to specific regions or disciplines depending on the opportunity.
What is a Speed Crit?
Speed Crits provide a unique opportunity to meet with an industry expert who can critique your work and provide advice on getting it to market.
What are 'market development and showcasing opportunities'?
Market development and showcasing opportunities for Professional Maker associates include facilitated access to markets, such as artisan Fields, PopUps, and/or curated retail placements.
Membership and payment
How much does membership cost?
Student Maker is $65 per year or $6 per month. Professional Maker is $150 per year or $13 per month. Collector is $170 per year or $15 per month, and Peer is $385 per year or $33 per month.
How do I join?
Select your tier on the artisan associates membership page and follow the prompts to complete payment. You will receive an email confirming your payment and inviting you to login into the associates portal and create a password.
How does membership renew?
Membership renews automatically. artisan will send a renewal reminder 30 days before expiry. A member can cancel their membership at any time by notifying artisan in writing via artisan associates portal contact form. Cancellation takes effect from the date artisan acknowledge the notice.
Can I get a refund if I change my mind?
artisan offers a 14-day change of mind period as a goodwill measure. If you join the program online and change your mind within 14 days of activation, you may request a full refund of the annual fee, provided you have not redeemed any member benefits during that period.
Is public liability insurance included?
Insurance is not included in the base membership fee. artisan is currently investigating an insurance package as an added benefit and will notify members when this is available.
Current members
I'm already an artisan member. What happens to my membership?
Your current membership continues until its renewal date. We'll be in touch directly with a tier recommendation.
Will my membership benefits change?
The new tiers are designed to give you more than before. Most current members will find their recommended tier includes everything they currently receive, plus additional benefits across Exchange, Exhibit, and Enterprise. If you have questions about your specific benefits, reply to the email from Carmel or get in touch directly.
